music moment:

The beauty of working (mostly) from home is the fact that I can make phonecalls in bed, scribbling notes between Hulu binges, with no makeup or heels in sight. Here's what it feels like:

New discovery/splurge: Dorothy Perkins

At long last, I have discovered the glory of Dorothy Perkins, a fabulous British women's retailer with prices that rival H&M and — wait for it —  INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING.

I'm spending the summer in New York City and thus have been pushing myself to craft a new wardrobe on a seriously tight budget. I feel pretty good about the fact that I spent about $145 on a lovely blazer, dress, skirt, belt and pair of earrings — all pieces that can be dressed up for work or down for the weekend.

Also note that my style icon for the past few weeks has been Dianna Agron, the beautiful, stylish bitch of "Glee" — which I definitely don't watch. (Seriously.) A chance encounter with an episode in which Ms. Agron wears SOCKS with WEDGE BOOTS (um, my new favorite trend) turned me on to her fabulous style.

Did I mention Dorothy Perkins currently has a 20 percent discount (off final purchase) for students? HURRY.

Behold, the dress that brought me to DP. A structured, floral number very reminiscent of the Misses Agron and Obama.

Cream blazer? Check. Next on my list? A classic, long and fitted black one.

So much floral! Really, I don't know where this all came from. Again, I blame Dianna Agron. This skirt looks a bit long, but I know on my tall frame it will be much shorter. I'd like to pair it with one of those super-cropped boyfriend tees.

The front of this belt has a classic buckle, but the BACK... my GOD.

Big, elegant earrings are the perfect offset to my favorite accessory — the timeless, effortless messy bun. Please don't ever go out of style.

and today's additions to my wish list...

These Elie Tahari Venus Ballet Flats. Oh, the lace. Oh, the mesh. Oh, the royal blue. Oh, the ever so slight heel...

And let's not forget about these, from diffractionfiber's Etsy shop. They would go nicely with my Scrabble tile pillow, no?

baggage.

I have this weird obsession with those what's-in-your bag features that women's magazines often do. I think a woman's bag can reveal a lot about her personality. My boyfriend is convinced it's not a woman's bag, but her desk. My response? "But my bag is my desk." And so much more. It's where I keep both my daily necessities and the random, useless things I collect throughout the day. Okay, so I'm a hoarder.

Photographer Jason Travis makes me feel not-so-guilty for being a hoarder. His work is beautiful, and explores the material possessions that humans can't leave the house without. And the contents of men's pockets are included, too!

Check out his work here.

Here's what's in my bag.

Semi-clockwise: two notebooks, a flyer for a gallery opening, earphones, my phone charger (never know when I'll need it), a bouquet of business cards (no business card myself), chapstick and foundation, my beloved Blackberry, a single earring (??), my wallet (a Marc Jacobs coinpurse), a digital recorder, a pen, and my ticket from the Blitzen Trapper show last week.

Now, where are my keys?

thursday lust: 7/1

Another fabulous offering from the ladies over at seesaw and their vintage Etsy account. I'm a little bit obsessed with this drawstring dress. If I could only find my teleportation device, I'd take this dress to London on a summer day, with a floppy hat and some red lipstick. Ah, overactive imagination. Calm yourself, it's still Thursday. Anyway, Etsy (and its Shop Local feature) reminds me of how great it is to be able to shop locally online.

book burning.

Hey.

Now let's get on with it.

Lately, I've been super intrigued by this new fireplace design fad. Got a little bookshelf overflow? Or no bookshelf at all? Use your fireplace and turn the wall fixture into one giant, ashy bookshelf.

I might be partial to these designs because I never use my fireplace. (I live in Arizona, so it's only really cold enough for a fire for about a week.) Either way, it's a cute idea, and totally livens up the room. I'm moving in August, so I plan on giving it a shot for all my coffee table books and magazines.

It's also good for people like me who don't have any rhyme or reason for the order of their books on their bookshelf. Some people organize by size, others by author. I've always kept it random. I have a bad habit of pulling a book from my shelf, only to put it back five minutes (or five days) later. Fortunately, none of my minor OCD tendencies compel me to organize my shelves. I also think random order catches the eye more aesthetically, as opposed to organizing by size.
